Connecticut Electrical Permits Outnumber Mechanical 4 to 1

Connecticut files 7,275 electrical permits against 1,638 mechanical ones, and the electrical records reach back to May 2023 while mechanical does not start until January 2025. If you sell heat pumps, standby generators, chargers or battery systems in Connecticut and you have been filtering on mechanical permits, you have been looking at the smaller and younger of the two files. The most common subject inside the electrical file is not any of those things. It is the panel.

How big is Connecticut's electrical permit file?

It is the second largest type we hold for the state, at 7,275 records and 25.4% of all 28,691 Connecticut permits across 51 towns.

Building leads with 13,610, which is normal everywhere. What is not normal is the gap below it. Electrical sits at 7,275, plumbing at 3,397, mechanical at 1,638, trench at 1,484. Electrical is more than four times the size of mechanical and more than twice the size of plumbing.

Depth matters as much as volume here. The earliest electrical record in the Connecticut file is dated May 8, 2023, and the most recent is August 30, 2026. Mechanical starts on January 2, 2025 and runs to August 29, 2026. That is roughly twenty months of mechanical history against forty of electrical, so any trailing comparison between the two is comparing a longer file to a shorter one before it compares anything else.

Why is the mechanical file so small?

Because in Connecticut the mechanical category is partly a filing convention rather than a description of the work.

We covered the general version of this in how Connecticut towns label permit types, which found that municipalities cannot amend the technical building code (the Office of the State Building Inspector within the Department of Administrative Services owns that) but they absolutely can, and do, label their own filings however they like. One code, 169 filing systems.

The electrical-versus-mechanical gap is the sharpest example of it. Look at our four deepest Connecticut towns:

Two of the four have never issued a mechanical permit in our file. Not a low count. Zero, across 12,517 combined records. The heating and cooling work in Bridgeport and Westport is obviously happening; it is being filed as something else. Our earlier read on Connecticut heat pump permits found Westport routing 139 of its 152 heat pump records through the building category.

One honest caveat on the trend. Monthly mechanical filings ran between 71 and 97 from September 2025 through July 2026, then jumped to 257 in August 2026. That jump is spread thinly across a lot of small towns, Hartford 45, Newtown 22, Guilford 15, then single digits down a long tail. It reads as more towns entering the file rather than a surge in work, and we are not going to present it as demand.

What is actually inside a Connecticut electrical permit?

Nine recurring themes, and they are not in the order most people would guess.

Of the 7,275 electrical records, 5,046 carry a work description. That is the denominator for everything below, and it is worth holding onto: about a third of the electrical file tells you nothing about the job at all.

These are keyword matches against description text, so a single record can land in more than one row. Read them as themes, not as clean job counts.

Why does the panel outrank every end use?

Because the panel is what all of the other work has in common, and it usually gets filed first.

Take the four electrification themes together, generators, batteries, heat pumps and chargers. Added naively they come to 945 records, but 933 of those are distinct once you remove the ones matching two themes at once. Either way, the 1,075 records mentioning a panel outnumber all four combined.

That ordering is the useful part. A homeowner who is putting in a standby generator, a charger and a heat pump over three years touches the panel once, near the beginning. So the panel record is early, and the end-use records are late. If you are buying permit data to reach people before a decision rather than after one, the early record is worth more.

Be careful with the word, though. Panel appears in 1,075 descriptions; the stricter service-upgrade phrasing appears in only 293. The gap is filled with subpanels, panel replacements, panel relocations and text that just happens to name the equipment. Treat a panel mention as a signal that a property's electrical capacity is being touched, which is exactly the moment when standby generator work and EV charger installation become possible, and not as a confirmed upgrade.

A permit is a signal about the homeowner, not the contractor. In Connecticut the electrical file is the cleanest version of that signal we hold, because it captures the property at the point where its capacity, and therefore its options, change.

Which Connecticut towns file the electrical work?

The four deep towns in the table above hold most of it, and their electrical shares differ enough to matter.

Westport files 30.5% of its permits as electrical, the highest of the four. Hartford and Bridgeport sit near 25% and 28%. Guilford is lowest at 21.4%, and Guilford is also the only one of the four with both a real mechanical file and near-complete descriptions.

Monthly volume across the state is steady rather than seasonal. Electrical filings ran between 264 and 491 a month from September 2025 through August 2026, with the low in February and the high in August. There is no heating-season spike and no summer collapse. We flagged the same absence in the heat pump piece, where the seasonal premise we started with turned out to be wrong, so we are not going to invent one here either. What can the Connecticut electrical file not tell you?

Three things, and they rule out whole categories of use.

It will not name the contractor. Contractor name is populated on 0.3% of Connecticut records, which is effectively nothing. If you want to know which shop pulled a permit, this is the wrong file, and the right lookup is the Department of Consumer Protection eLicense portal, which publishes the status of the E-1 contractor and E-2 journeyperson licences issued under Chapter 393 of the General Statutes. Those licences are state-issued, incidentally, not municipal, even though the permit is municipal.

It will not tell you what a job is worth. Connecticut carries no project cost at all, so there is no benchmarking, no market sizing and no way to rank jobs by value.

It will not support radius or drive-time work either, because Connecticut records carry no coordinates. Town is the geographic unit available, which is fine given that towns are the permitting authorities. Counties are a coverage label in this state and nothing more, since Connecticut abolished county government decades ago.

If you sell anything that ends in a circuit, start from Connecticut electrical permits rather than from the trade category that matches your product name. Mechanical will miss two of the four towns where we hold the most records. Then search descriptions rather than trusting the type field, and accept the third of records that carry no description as a known cost of the file rather than a defect you can filter around.

Panel mentions are the front of the queue. Generators, chargers, batteries and heat pumps are the back of it, and by the time those appear the buying decision is usually made.
